There is a legend that this spring was discovered in the mountains of Fuetsu upstream of the Matsukawa river by Ryukei, a master of tea ceremony in the Edo period (1603-1867). Lord Hori of the Iida clan also used the water for his tea ceremony. Today this spring is found amidst a beautiful forest of sugi (Japanese cedar) and hinoki (Japanese cypress).
